3 PhD students in Energy and Environmental Technology
Ref nr:2008-59BAnställningsform:Tidsbegränsad anställningSista ansökningsdag:******Stationeringsort: VästeråsAkademin för hållbar samhälls- och teknikutveckling
We seek three (3) PhD candidates within the area Energy and Environmental Engineering in the research profile Process and Resource Optimization at the School School of Sustainable Development of Society and Technology. The candidate is expected to work multi-disciplinary with other PhD students and industrial partners as a team focused on the development of flexible and sustainable techniques for energy and resource use. She/he must have the ability to conduct independent and cooperative research. The research is conducted in close collaboration with industry and today about 8 professors and 40 PhD students including industrially adjunct PhD students are working in the research profile. Candidates must have a MSc. or equivalent degree in energy engineering, environmental engineering, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering or an appropriate discipline. The detailed research topics and requirements are as follows. 1.Carbon dioxide capture and storage systems- properties of CO2/H2O mixtures. One of the PhD candidates will conduct research in the area of carbon dioxide capture and storage (CCS) with focus of properties of CO2/H2O mixtures. A possible way to reduce the emissions of carbon dioxide from processes for production of power and heat, and with that also the climate change impact, is to capture and store the carbon dioxide that is produced in the combustion. Technologies to do this are under research and development. It is of importance to describe and calculate how mixtures of carbon dioxide and water behave at different conditions especially when the CO2 mixtures have different impurities. This knowledge is important and needed to be able to design and dimension different components of the process and to predict their impact on different materials. The candidate for this position is expected to have good knowledge in thermodynamics and interest and ability to conduct both theoretical studies of models for the properties of the mixtures and application of the models in design and simulation of components in processes for capture and storage of carbon dioxide. 2. PhD student in Optimization of biogas production with surrounding systems. One of the PhD candidates will conduct research in the area of biogas production with focus on optimization of biogas processes. There is a large potential for production of biogas from organic residues, different crops and/or agricultural residues. Therefore biogas can make an important contribution to increase the use of renewable energy resources in an energy system. To be able reduce the costs for producing and using biogas, the current processes and systems have to be optimized. The candidate for this position is expected to have good knowledge in applied thermodynamics and fluid mechanics, and interest and ability to work with process simulations as well as field measurements at full scale and pilot plants. 3. Optimizaton of active sludge processes One of the PhD candidates will conduct research in the area optimization of active sludge processes in waste water treatment plants concerning transport of oxygen and use of energy. By optimization and control of the biological process at waste water treatment the use of energy and chemicals can be reduced. This can then further reduce both costs and environmental impacts. The PhD student for this position should have a background in either microbiology or process control, or preferably both. The work will be both experimental in full scale plants as well as process modeling and optimization.
BehörighetskravDEMANDS Only one that can enrol or already is enrolled for PhD studies at a university can be employed at a PhD position. The demands for being qualified for PhD studies is to have at least four years of university studies, corresponding to a bachelor degree or a master degree depending on conditions in different countries.
