Uppsala University hereby declares the following position to be open for application:Chair in Engineering Mechanicsat the Department of Engineering Sciences. In this context, engineering mechanics is understood to deal with the motion, deformation and flow of matter under the action of applied loads, and with associated phenomena and applications. Activities range from fundamental research on the properties and behaviour of solids and fluids to applied research in engineering. They frequently involve interactions with other engineering sciences, such as thermodynamics, electromagnetics, systems and control, and materials technology. Approaches used comprise theoretical, analytical, computational and experimental methods. Duties: General responsibility for research and teaching in the field of engineering mechanics. Teaching and supervision on basic, advanced and postgraduate levels. Research in holder’s sub-fields of specialization, primarily within solid or fluid mechanics. Establishment of a research group with main activities within solid and fluid mechanics. Cooperation with other research groups within the department and the university. Dissemination of information about research and development. Leadership and administration. Qualifications required: According to Chap. 4, § 5 of the Higher Education Ordinance the eligibility criteria for employment as professor are scientific as well as pedagogic proficiency. According to the appointment regulations of Uppsala University, it is also a general requirement that teachers have any other skills which are necessary to carry out their duties proficiently. According to the employment policy of Uppsala University, the scientific proficiency should be demonstrated through independent research that significantly exceeds the qualifications required for the Swedish title of “docent”. Planning and leadership competence is important. The holder is expected to be able to teach in Swedish within two years.Ranking: For this position, the ranking will be based primarily on the scientific and teaching proficiency of the applicants, with special emphasis on scientific proficiency. This order of priorities in the application of the ranking criteria is not absolute. A combined consideration of all grounds of assessment could result in, for instance, an applicant with superior pedagogical proficiency getting higher ranking than one with somewhat stronger scientific qualifications. Pedagogic proficiency will be assessed as carefully as scientific proficiency. In the examination of scientific proficiency, special attention will be given to expertise in central sub-fields of engineering mechanics, primarily solid or fluid mechanics, to fundamental and applied research in these sub-fields, to skill in the use of theoretical, analytical, computational and experimental methods, and to ability to establish and lead a research group with main activities within solid and fluid mechanics. In the examination of pedagogic proficiency, skills and experience in the planning, execution and evaluation of teaching, as well as supervision and examination, will be considered. In filling this position the university aims at recruiting the person who, in the combined evaluation of documented qualifications, competence and skills, is judged the most suitable to carry out and develop arising tasks and to contribute to a positive development of the group and the department.Administrative proficiency and skill in leading multidisciplinary research projects will be considered as will suitability for and interest in leadership. The ability to cooperate with governmental and private agencies, and to inform the public about research and development work, will also be considered. Personal circumstances (such as parental leave), that may benefit applicants in the assessment of qualifications, should be included in the list of qualifications and experience.Uppsala University is striving for a better gender balance in its research and teaching staff. Since most professors of the Faculty of Science and Technology are men, women are especially invited to apply for this position. How to apply: The application must be written in English.
