This letter is about the Development Instructor program. A 14 month program for people who want to do volunteers work in Africa . The need for people, who are interested in volunteering your time to help in some of the poorest parts of the world, is enormous. If you go ahead and do it, you will have a life changing experience.

This letter will introduce you to the basics of the programme and also tell you how you can get a lot more detailed information. It will also tell you where to go from here, if you want to enrol for the program.
THE IDEA The Development Instructor programme is a unique chance for people from the rich part of the world to dedicate 6 months of their life to a practical contribution to the fight against poverty and diseases in the most unfortunate areas of the world. HUMANA People to People is currently running around 200 development projects in Southern Africa, , and Central America , reaching a total of around 5 million people. Development Instructors are all sorts of people – from all countries on earth, young and not so young, from all walks of life, experienced and inexperienced …… and still, they have a lot in common. They all have big hearts and a willingness to do something about the most basic contradiction in today’s world: the extreme poverty in which far too many people live. Anyone can become a Development Instructor as long as you are prepared to commit yourself to the programme and the framework around it. The next team starts on 1st of November. In 2008 there will be teams 1st of February, 1st of May, 1st of August and 1st of November. *The program is 14 month *6 months training, education and action period in a DNYS School in *6 month volunteer work in Africa *2 months of evaluation and promotion work in Europe .

The 6 month education and action period in a DNYS School Centre in .
The DNYS Schools in are the names for a number of school centres, with a unique concept, taking care of and educating children and adults with special needs. The school centres comprises of care homes for children and teenagers, who cannot live at home, and a school, which offer a basic school education together with a number of practical and creative skills like cooking, art and music, theatre, nature life, travels as we find it important to provide our student with an international and humanitarian outlook. The DNYS schools also work together about several events like concerts, sports events, building weekends and theatre competition.
The 5 DNYS Schools, The School Centres in Juelsminde, Nordjylland, Bustrup, Bogense and Nakkebølle are training Development Instructors, combining the studies about Africa and development, with volunteer training and experiences in the school centre.
The program is designed in this way, that you can work during your training at the school and in this way obtain a scholarship to pay for the program and accommodation cost.
The training consists of half time studies and half time volunteer work and practical training in organisation, arranging cultural events, teaching students with many different needs, organising practical tasks and actions etc.
The studies and training to become Development Instructor in Africa .
The 6 months training programme is an unusual and exciting education designed to enable you to rise to the challenges of the project period, going to Africa . Courses and studies are combined with experience based learning and team building activities. You learn to be the driving force in your own training – just as you must be the driving force while working in solidarity with your colleagues in Africa during the project period. Within the first 2 months your team will receive job descriptions from Humana People to People and decide between you who go where. You will start to communicate with your future project leader in Africa and your will develop and specialize your studies towards the job in Africa . The Studies and courses you must attend to qualify yourself to become a Development Instructor are within the above areas:
Learning about the situation in the world Development in theory and practice Language training Project Skills Personal Fitness Art and culture Organising and management During the 6-months period of training you will also take part in bigger events, e.g. Development Conference, Theatre Competition, Study weekends, Sports events together with Development Instructors in training from other schools.
Then you are off to the project for 6 months. This is what it is all about. In spite of your training and the specific preparation you have made, you have big challenges ahead of you.Your work in the School Centre: The social and practical work you will be doing at the school, will take up half of your time daily during your 6 months training. Some of you will work in the evenings and weekends, and do your studies in the mornings; others will work in the daytime, and do your studies in the afternoons and evenings. Once a week, there will be a day for courses and group meetings, where all the Development Instructors will be together. You will work with children, who for many different reasons have a need for a school, which can manage their special needs and interests. Some of the students are here to get more challenges in the school programme. Some come with the hope, that the individual teaching can improve their knowledge. Some have learning problems, some have so many problems at home that they are unable to concentrate on learning. Others have a need for help to make social relations with other kids or with grown ups. All of them need challenges and a feeling of success, to help them believe that they can change their situation. In this environment, there is a great need for people with personal surplus, who can help create a good environment. This is one of the main tasks for you, while you are training to be Development Instructor. Here are some examples of what your work could include, depending at the need and your special skills and interest.
Be an extra teacher in a class with students who need extra help Teaching English or German to a group of children Have a special programme with a student who needs to have special attention Help to prepare and participate in the travels in at the school. Teach in special subjects like theatre, painting, sport, climbing, horse riding, mechanic etc… Make and implement weekend programme with the children at one of the Carehomes. Take care of the network/ computers at the school Having night watch at one of the Care Homes Doing maintenance Taking care of the outdoor areas Cleaning and cooking tasks

The Projects period of 6 Month:After the 6 Month training period in you will sign your contract with Humana People to People and go to Africa to work in a projectThe Projects in Africa area: Child Aid; a program that focuses on the well being of children by addressing the difficulties in the communities and environment HOPE or TCE (Total Control of the Epidemic) programs with the aim of stopping the spread of HIV & AIDS and dealing with the consequences that exist · Teacher Training Colleges where there is a focus to educate teachers for rural areas · Vocational schools for young people to learn basic skills for their future · Schools for street children · Sanitation and hygiene in rural areas · Raising funds for the social projects by forming partnerships and selling second hand clothes and shoes.

Here you come back to the school and while you take up your old job, you write a report on your project in and also prepare PowerPoint presentations, write articles and go on a promotion tour to different European countries to do "agitation" for a better world - invite people to "follow your footsteps". You evaluate and digest what you have done and the changes that have happened to you. Getting ready to go on with the rest of your life. Before you go to Africa , your team will make plans for the Evaluation.

The economy Your work 26 hour a week in one of the mentioned jobs covers your school fees, accommodation, food and program cost during your 6 months preparation to become a Development Instructor. You obtain a scholarship from your work. In Africa , you do not need money – accommodation is provided and you will receive a small allowance that covers food and other basic necessities. It is enough for you to live well whilst you are in Africa .
Anyway to join this DI program there are 2 different costs that make up the amount you need to pay.
1. You pay an enrolment fee of 4000 DKK (530 €). Once the enrolment fee is paid you have secured yourself a place in the team. 2. You pay half of the travel costs to Africa - 6.000 DKK (approx. 800 €) – Humana People to People pays the other half as a scholarship. This amount of 12.000 DKK includes return flight, insurance whilst in Africa and visa. This amount you can choose to fundraise during the first 4 month of the preparation program or you can choose to pay yourself.
Other Costs - Besides the above costs, you will need to secure the following:

Pocket money for 8 months (6 months at the school and 2 months Camp Future ) to cover your personal requirements (sanitary supplies, home travels, open weekends etc). 5. Vaccinations and malaria prevention for Africa . We can advise you which ones to take but you need to confirm this with your own doctor. It is best to get the vaccinations whilst in your own country as there may be some you can get for free.
HOW TO CONTINUE FROM HERE
1. If you consider doing this programme, the first step for you is to read the www.juelsminde.com and www.humana.org websites. 2. You fill in and send us your application form. (See below). We will then get back to you to answer any questions you might have. 3. The next step is then for you to attend an information meeting. Along with our sister schools, we have several of these meetings every month in different locations all over the world. Each information meeting is followed by the possibility for you to have a personal meeting with our representative. 4. The very best is for you to come for information days at one of the schools as you get to see the school and meet the headmaster of the school, the DI teacher and the DI´s, who are already in the program. 5. If there is no meeting near you, it can be replaced by several telephone interviews. 6. When you decide to enrol, you fill in and sign an enrolment form and pay the enrolment fee.
